Like a lot of practitioners, in the beginning I thought I needed to be a PT to work in pelvic health. And since that’s what I knew I wanted to do, I set off down the PT path.
Then one day, while I was racking up my mandatory observation hours, my world changed…
The Physical Therapist I had been shadowing called in sick, and the facility director said, “How could you like to shadow an Occupational Therapist?”
The question flashed through my mind…
What the heck is OT?
Little did I know I’d be answering that question for the rest of my life, because after that one observatory session, I knew I had come home.
OT was so much more comprehensive and holistic than anything I had seen during my studies and all my clinical work that, from the first moment I saw it in action...
I knew that Occupational Therapy could heal pelvic health dysfunction more completely than a purely physical approach.
So that day I went home and started filling out applications to OT school.
When I got my acceptance from NYU, I was over the moon!
But when I got there, I realized I had chosen a lonely road. At school I did as many pelvic floor presentations as I could, but my classmates — and even a professor or two — didn’t really understand.
I’d hear things like...
Why do you want to do what PTs do?
And...
Well that’s — (cue raised eyebrows) — interesting.

Why do you want to work with pee?!
But I knew that working in pelvic health didn’t have to mean being a PT in OTs clothing. And I knew that pelvic health was much more than just “working with pee.” (That one still makes me laugh!)
The truth is, as OTs no one is better equipped to specialize in pelvic health than we are.
After all, we’ve already been trained to listen to our clients’ unique story and connect on an emotional level — which is essential when you’re talking about a taboo topic like pelvic floor health.
We already know how to look beyond the most obvious symptoms and address the whole person, letting pelvic health clients know we are there to support them — not just tell them what to do.
Plus, we already speak the language of ADLs — toileting, sleep hygiene, self-care, and sexuality!
